Adaptive Capacity

Adaptive Capacity

Details  When conditions change, the adaptive capacity is a measure of the ability to maintain essential activities and wellbeing while adjusting to the pressures for change. How would you measure the adaptive capacity of the personal transportation activity systems in a city as a function of the urban form and demographics?

GATE Organization

GATE Organization

Details  We are inspired by history - 100 years ago 62 engineers in New York got together and started what would become Safety Engineering, and that action has changed the world. Now, we will change the future - by changing existing systems - one engineering project at a time. GATE is a peer-to-peer organization set up to facilitate the agile learning needed for the emergence of a new discipline - Transition Engineering.
History of GATE

History of GATE

Details  The story of Transition Engineering is a convergence of professional engineers seeking more impactful approaches to sustainability, and academics searching for a methodology that deals with the complexity of change to address un-sustainability risks and issues. Transition Engineering developed through research in New Zealand in the 2000's. The concept was set out in the IET Prestige Lecture series in 2010. The idea of setting up a professional organization was explored, and the path to the GATE opened in 2014. The GATE gained legal status in 2016 and elected the Trustees in 2017. The website and administration was developed and the GATE opened for membership in 2018. Join Today!
Honesty

Honesty

Details  We have a big problem with honesty. The world is counting on us for technology solutions to the problems of global warming and dependence on fossil fuels. These problems are the unintended consequence of successful technology. We are all too eager to participate in rather delusional enterprises like ocean thermal energy, carbon capture and storage and hydrogen and fuel cells. Now we will be honest with society about the fact that there are no solutions, only hard choices and big changes.
